The Button Family plus and minus
One of the sets of stories we have enjoyed as a family has been The Borrowers. I took this idea, (and a pile of buttons which we picked up from somewhere!, oh, and a dolls house set!), and we are working with the Button Family for our number processes. I love it, and so do the children fortunately!
We have here Ahmed Addition - he has LOADS of energy, and likes to pick buttons up from all around the house, (which is a good job, as we have stray buttons all over the place.eeek), and then he piles them all up and counts them one by one, or maybe two plus three and so on - we then wrote out in our beeswax crayons these sums, after meeting the beeswax plus sign and equals. Starting with button dots and moving to figures. Both Tiger and Frog also decided to draw the Family Button, which was cute - then Tiger who is First Grade and for whom this work is specifically for, then went on to do sums in thousands for two afternoons, so I guess he likes the look of those figures on paper!
Next, please meet Mummy minus. She receives the buttons and then takes great pleasure in giving them away to people! Maybe there is another Mummy making a coat or shirt for her child who needs those buttons. She is very, very generous, (I hope that is a Mummy quality!), so where she has six buttons she may give four away. How many do we have left?
Put to paper again as before.
I was collecting their work in individual folders, but to be honest, they weren’t staying on the shelves very nicely, so I have bought some expandable folders and labelled sections. If we do more than this amount in the year of ‘best work’, then I will roll it into another file. I am considering buying some proper onion skin Main Lesson Books which would also fit into the folder sections per subject, but it will probably be preferable for me to bind the work at the end of the year or block of work that we do.
